Archives Space Implementation Task Force

Overview

The Emory Libraries is undertaking a multi-year project to bring all Emory University’s special collections repositories into ArchivesSpace, a shared, integrated system to manage archival data and workflows. 

ArchivesSpace (ASpace) is an open source, integrated software platform designed by archivists for archival workflows and data.  Essentially an integrated library system (ILS) for archives data, it supports a wide spectrum of functions, tasks, and workflows within an archival repository and is optimized to accommodate the complex, multi-level, and relational structures of archival material, something that is not well-supported in traditional ILS systems like Ex Libris Alma. ASpace application functionalities include (but are not limited to) management of container and location information, accession data, descriptive data, name and subject authorities, and digital objects; tracking and management of archival processing tasks; and output of encoded finding aids and catalog records. It is a standards-based tool that supports EAD, MARC/XML, MODS, Dublin Core, EAC, and METS records.  Phase I included migration of accessions and adoption of ArchivesSpace for all accessioning and agent records and concluded in December, 2018. Phase II focuses on descriptive metadata, resource management, and archival discovery and is currently underway.
